  • Over the Falls

    Over the Falls

This is my first signature piece and the 1x Photo Awards 2015 2nd Place Winner as judged by National Geographic senior editor Kim Hubbard. Published in 1x.com's yearbook, Vision IX. This is a view from the top of Nooksack Falls about 40 miles east of Bellingham, Washington. The rushing whitewater, the sculpted rock, and the dark evergreens combine to create a powerful drama and sense of place that I hoped to capture. I was aided on this day by the mist rising from the bottom of the falls in the deep canyon below. 25 January 2015.

  • Picture Lake

    Picture Lake

This is iconic Mt Shuksan viewed at sunrise from Picture Lake in the North Cascades Mountain Range of Washington State. At 4 am in Bellingham the weather looked promising, so I jumped in my car and raced to this locale below Artist Point, arriving there before 6 am to set up the tripod. The sky lightened and I made a series of shots looking across the lake. This perspective of Mt Shuksan has appeared on innumerable calendars around the world. 7 June 2015

  • Racehorse Falls

    Racehorse Falls

This is Racehorse Falls, hidden in a hard-to-reach chasm in the foothills of the North Cascades Mountain Range east of Bellingham, Washington. The capture was made before sunrise to take advantage of the even light. The steep "trail" descending into the gulch is difficult to negotiate and I took great care to obtain this point of view.

  • A Forest Chorus

    A Forest Chorus

One of my favorite places to walk is along the Horseshoe Bend Trail out the Mt Baker Highway along the Nooksack River. Here the evergreens and mosses create a magical scene. Washington State, 25 January 2015

  • Morning at the Falls

    Morning at the Falls

Finalist in the Outdoor Photographer American Landscape 2016 photo contest. Whatcom Falls Park is a treasure in the town of Bellingham, Washington where I live, a place I frequent often with my camera. On this cloudy and cool winter morning, Whatcom Creek was raging and I was exhilarated by the spectacle as it swept over the falls, throwing spray into the air. I wiped my lens many times while shooting. With this image I hoped to capture the drama of this place which, for me, symbolizes the abundance of our area. This creek connects our city’s water supply, Lake Whatcom, to the saltwater of the Salish Sea. 22 November 2015.

  • Here Comes the Sun

    Here Comes the Sun

This is morning sunrise at Whatcom Falls Park, near where I live in Bellingham, Washington. I went there to photograph the creek and waterfalls but the forest glow was irresistible and drew me up this trail to frame this shot. 9 January 2016

  • Forest Bones

    Forest Bones

Facing away from the Pacific Ocean coastline, at Rialto Beach in Washington State's Olympic National Park. is an area where evergreens have perished in the storm surges. To me they appear as forest bones in a mysterious graveyard. 6 September 2017

    Rialto Beach

This is the dramatic Pacific Ocean coastline in Olympic National Park of Washington State. The combination of rushing water and striking sea stacks created exciting image-making opportunities during this cycle of low tides. 6 September 2017

  • Storm Above Rae Lakes

    Storm Above Rae Lakes

This is iconic Fin Dome that looks over the famed Rae Lakes in California's Kings Canyon National Park. Hiking north on the John Muir Trail over Glen Pass, with stormy weather on the periphery, our party of three was happy to reach treeline as we descended past these lakes. 27 July 2016

  • Renewal

    Renewal

Featured in the Showcase section of the November 2017 edition of Outdoor Photographer magazine. This is a view of Grouse Meadow during an eight day backpacking trip in California’s Kings Canyon National Park with my sister. Here, along the John Muir Trail, LeConte Canyon widens and the tumbling middle fork of the Kings River becomes a placid pool in a welcome meadow. On this day the trail pace was quick as the miles were long and damp, so I did not stop as usual to pull out the tripod. Instead I raised up the ISO and wandered off-trail towards this inviting scene. With this image I hoped to share the precious intimacy I felt there. 28 July 2014

  • Grouse Meadow

    Grouse Meadow

This is a view of remote Grouse Meadow, located in Kings Canyon National Park in the Sierra Nevada of California. Here the narrow canyon widens and the tumbling river slows for maybe a mile. The granite mountains and dark pines surrounding this grassy meadow with reflecting water create a sense of place and drama I was excited to capture. 31 July 2014
